Saturday was culture day as Jules and I took a trip to Tate Britain; mainly for the Francis Bacon exhibition but also for the Turner Prize 2008.

Having previously only seen Bacon’s paintings in print, it was particularly exciting to have the chance to experience his work close-up; and we certainly weren’t disappointed.

The gallery space comprised ten individual rooms, each containing works from specific periods and themes. It’s true to say that you cannot possibly get a sense of the emotional content when you see his pictures outside of the gallery context. The archive room was of particular interest as it contained retrospectives of the artist and insights into the inspiration and drive behind his work. It’s a shame the paintings had to be placed behind protective glass as it caused many to become mirrors, reflecting both the viewer and the rest of the gallery, which removed much of their original energy and intent.

Having spent a good hour stuffing our minds with Bacon, we headed to the café to stuff the rest of us. This turned out to be a costly affair: we both had a sandwich type thing, a Pepsi and a slice of pecan pie, which was, undeniably, very nice but came in at around the same as you’d pay for a reasonable Chinese take-away for at least three people. The signs stated that the catering was provided by the Tate itself, in order to subsidise it; I should, by rights, now be able to call at least one of its major artworks mine.

After lunch we headed off to the Turner Prize 2008 gallery. I had seen snippets of the nominees’ entries beforehand so I knew what to expect, sort of.

The first room was Goshka Macuga’s offering, which seemed more of a minimalist promotion at Ikea than a work of art. The first part to the installation was rain-like pencil lines all the way around the walls. To complement this was a sparsely arranged series of photo-montages. The final part was three dominating steel, glass and fabric sculptures. All of this, it seems, is meant to depict relationships – both human and material; I guess you need to know the background of the people concerned to understand. Or perhaps not. If I had the space and the money, however, I would have one of the sculptures, Deutsches Volks (pictured), as a feature; though not for its implied symbolism, of course, just because it looks so bloody cool.

Walking through to the next gallery, we were confronted by Cathy Wilkes’s entry.

I Give you All My Money is a bizarre installation dominated by two supermarket checkouts. There are empty and broken jars, roof-tiles, items of crockery and other standard household items strewn around the space but the most curious part is the presence of two nude female mannequins, one with her head inside a birdcage, leans against the far checkout; an empty baby-buggy stands next to her. The other, wearing a nurse’s hat, sits on a toilet at the forefront. She has an array of objects including horseshoes, a balloon and a teacup hanging from string and wire bound around her eyes, and is also holding a string of horseshoes. Scattered around the base, are pieces of dried porridge, apparently. This piece supposedly conveys a breakdown of communication and the distinct inability to understand another person’s thoughts and feelings. I’m sure the items have some kind of significance – not for me, however.

The passage leading to the next gallery became a meandering tunnel, becoming progressively darker. Before entering the room, the last piece of light highlights information about the artist, Runa Islam and her entries. These were all film and video based: the first, Be the first to see when you see it shows a woman walking around a display of china crockery and bells. She scrutinises them before the scene cuts away to slow motion footage of her pushing them or dropping them onto the concrete floor. The second, CINEMATOGRAPHY is shot in and around a factory, or her studio perhaps, moving from outside to inside, the camera seems to be on a programmed path forming a pattern – which turns out to be spelling the word cinematography – hooray for robotics. We left before it finished. Lastly was First Day of Spring, film of rickshaw drivers not doing very much at all as the camera slowly pans across. We left almost before this started.

The last artist, Mark Leckey also had a video based entry, composed of several separate works. Of those we stopped to see: one was a continuous slideshow which started with a scene of a stark room occupied by an object on a podium at the far end. With each slide the camera zooms in on what turns out to be a highly convex mirror, reflecting the room and a door leading to a small box-room, which becomes the focus. Each time the camera zooms the room becomes more detailed and we see a partially obscured poster of a semi-naked woman, there are pictures pinned to the wall and someone’s hand, the artist’s, presumably; this is all very reminiscent of the device used by Deckard to examine evidence in Blade Runner. When it’s in as close as possible, the scene refreshes back to the room where a different object is seated on the podium and the whole process starts again, the smaller images on the wall of the room have changed but the poster stays constant throughout the different versions. Another part of the installation is a black television showing video of Felix the Cat on a potter’s wheel being filmed, lit by strobe lights. The camera views keep changing between what’s being filmed and what’s filming it, all the time accompanied by a soundtrack from a 70s sci-fi B-movie. The final part is a view of a dilapidated room with nothing but a CGI of Jeff Koons’s Rabbit in the centre which the camera perpetually circles so the room can be seen distorting round the curves of the figure. By the time I’d watched all this Jules had moved on. When I caught up with her, she was into the last part of the installation; presumably this was the feature piece, cinema in the round, but it seemed to have become stuck on a close-up image of a lemon. Fascinating.

Emerging from the cinematic darkness, we were met by the bright lights of what I suppose you could call the recovery room: an area set out with tables sporting pads of paper, pencils and pots of badges on which were the names of the four artists. Along the walls were cork boards filled with people’s comments, some pinned up with the badges. We stayed for a while reading them, there were the usual “xxx woz ‘ere” type of thing but also a few inspired offerings, most of them expressing disappointment over this year’s entries.

I’m not a great fan of modern/contemporary art and don’t claim to understand it – if indeed there is anything to understand in the first place; and, whilst it was certainly an experience, I couldn’t help feeling a little empty and unchallenged. With the exception of Cathy Wilkes’s sculpture, which both Jules and I liked because of its intrigue (even if we didn’t ‘get it’), there was no edge to the other work, no points of contention, it just seemed to be there purely because it could be. Surely part of the point of all this was to for it to stick two fingers up at you and get ready for a fight?

After the Turner, we headed off to the established galleries: the 16th century portraiture and landscapes, Hogarth’s London et al. I have to say I find them a little dull and like very old family photo albums. One interesting piece of information was that Elizabeth I insisted her portraits were painted flat and amateurish, which is why there is such a contrast in detail between them and other works of that period.

Whilst wandering through the rooms I managed to glimpse Martin Creed’s Work No. 850. This consists of a number of athletes sprinting through the Duveen Gallery at 30 second intervals. In the artist’s words:

“I like running. I like seeing people run and I like running myself… running is the opposite of being still. If you think about death as being completely still and movement as a sign of life, then the fastest movement possible is the biggest sign of life. So then running fast is like the exact opposite of death: it’s an example of aliveness.”

Which does make sense, I suppose. I needed to sit down after watching it.

We continued through more works, both old and new: some Constables, William Blake, Cecil Collins – particularly The Angel of The Flowing Light - a stunning painting. Some other notable highlights were Tracey Emin’s CV and sketches, and Paul Noble, who seems to have a fixation with a certain part of the male anatomy, with which he shares the first part of his surname – each to their own.

Time was running out so after a quick rummage through the shop, we headed off. It was a fabulous day and one we need to complete, as we didn’t get to see all the galleries; we’ll do that next time, probably taking in Tate Modern again, too.

So, after a smooth, yet ridiculously early journey up to Kettering, I spent the day at Marval; the company that produces the call-logging system we use at work.

I was on a course to futher my skillbase on the web-based side of the application, which I’m in the process of developing forms for. This turned out to be incredibly informative and I now know much more about the system’s capabilities. I have a lot of ideas on how to impliment new ways of making our lives on the Servicedesk easier; and that can only be a good thing!

The trip back to London was fine, apart from not being able to get much work on the book done because of the sun shining on the screen for most of the time. As was to be expected, having arrived at around 6pm, the tube was heaving, but it’s not far from St. Pancras to London Bridge, so it wasn’t totally unbearable.
It was fairly packed at London Bridge too. I managed to see that there was a train to Eastbourne due to leave shortly – or so I thought – so I set off toward the platform, only find it heading off, full to bursting, ten minutes early; except it wasn’t, it was three-quarters of an hour late.

I decided that this was not an encouraging sign and went to find out about the next available train to Lewes. There didn’t appear to be one in the immediate, or indeed, distant future. Again, this didn’t fill me with confidence but I did notice there was a train going to Brighton in a few minutes, so I decided that it would be better to get that and have a slightly longer journey but at least it was a definite. I use the words ‘slightly’ and ‘longer’ with my tongue wedged firmly in my cheek, however, as it has to be one of the slowest journeys from London I have made in a long while; nearly two hours by the time I get home and that was with a direct connection. Oh, the fun of rail travel.

Still, it’s been a good day otherwise and I have more knowledge, a Marval pen and a new 1gb memory stick for my troubles. Bonus!

MobileMe is having problems

This is all very unlike the streamlined and largely flawless Apple updates we have all come to expect and enjoy. I hope it’s all worth it.

I was surprised to discover that due to an error in the way royalty accounts were calculated, I am in fact due some royalty return from the initial sales of my book after all. Unfortunately, it seems that my payment details are not on file (even though I have received numerous cheques in the past) so they can’t actually give me any money. Having unsuccessfully tried to contact the royalties department, both by phone and email I decided the best way of getting things moving would be to contact my project manager.

Royalties, I found out, is a dirty word as there have been several ‘systematic issues’ causing no end of missing or erroneous payments. Matters weren’t made any better after discovering that the reason I couldn’t get through to them is because this is a national holiday period in Holland lasting from Thursday to Tuesday. And to think we get ecstatic because of a 3 day weekend.

Hopefully, the email awaiting them will sort things out and I’ll start to see some return from all the hard work, a bit of a financial relief having just ordered the new Mac..

Now I’m no spring chicken but I’m not quite ready to book my place at the Sunny Days retirement home, either. Following Sunday’s epic battle, which, to someone whose exercise regime generally comprises lifting a coffee cup and moving a mouse and little else, the continuous getting up, crouching down, pushing wire, squeezing pipe antics took their toll and I’ve since been walking like an arthritic octogenarian who has recently discovered mountaineering. Throw in RSI of the thumbs and blurred vision due to the medicine for the eye problem and you have your very own OAP taster kit.

Today was a productive but ultimately painful day. Following a nice family pub lunch with Jules’s mum, brother and his girlfriend, Jules and Little Blubs headed off to a bridesmaids’ tea-party to meet the others and for a final dress fitting. While they were out I set about running electricity between Jules’s sheds. This is a real Heath Robinson job involving an extension lead, a length of garden hose and some jubilee clips. The reason? Simple: we discovered the cable was not recommended for outdoor use; so the idea was to thread it through the hose, which by design is waterproof, of course.

It all started off well enough but as it reached the three-quarter mark it started putting up a fight. Although there was plenty of clearance, the cable kept kinking and jamming; effectively making the task akin to administering a string enema to a large Python. I was still struggling with it when Jules returned and despite our joint efforts, it refused to budge at the final foot or so. Fortunately, the length was sufficient to bridge the gap; although it left it more exposed than I would have liked. My patience and tenacity paid off, however, and now Jules can get to work on her jewellery making.

The rest of the evening was spent installing, uninstalling and reinstalling my Adobe applications after discovering In Design and the latest Photoshop beta don’t play nicely together. All good fun though,

Today was bowling day, bowling day. B-b-b-b-b-b-b-bowling day. Yes, we all piled down to Brighton marina to wear silly shoes and attempt to sprain our wrists.

Our reputation preceded us, of course, as the staff sent us off to the furthest lane in the building; not wanting us to show the other patrons up with our professional prowess, naturally. To further handicap us, they made sure the lane malfunctioned from the outset: firstly, the kiddy-rails wouldn’t retract; still, the ever-attentive staff were on hand to fix the problem. Sadly, this created another in the process, as the lane didn’t reset and we were left hanging; Little Blubs having already taken her first shot. Again, this was dealt with in what seemed like the blink of an eye, once we’d used the handy Service Call button; 15 times, in fact, before resorting to going back to reception where a varying sequence of gesticulations and noises finally explained the problem to the blank-eyed bowl-monkeys.

All this had the desired effect on our game: meaning we couldn’t have hit a day-glo elephant silhouetted by a brightly lit barn-door. Only Mr. Cheese seemed to have not been at all phased by the whole affair and went on to win by a fairly sizeable margin.

A little fresh air was needed after this so we wandered around the marina complex for a while.

Blepharitis [blef-uh-rahy-tis]:An inflammation of the eyelids, specifically the margins. Early symptoms include: having to be at the eye hospital almost an hour earlier than you would normally be at work; sitting around for large periods of time doing nothing in particular.

Initial diagnosis: sitting in a dark room having bright lights shone into your eyes and sneak-attack eye-drops deployed. Followed by more of the same from a comedy bow-tie (Union flag) wearing consultant.

Treatment: One month of self-inflicted torture in the form of two different types of eye-drops and ointment resembling weak glue.

Side effects: Watering; stinging; headache; one of your oldest friends, an administrator at the hospital, belittling your condition and questioning the validity of your middle name.

In the far-distant olden days (pre-1982), buying music was an altogether more rewarding experience: there was no Amazon, no iTunes, no, you had to get off your backside and shuffle down to the shops where you would find row upon row of cardboard-sleeved (or if you were lucky, a picture-disc) vinyl goodness. There was the gentle thwup as you slowly flipped your way through the latest and greatest, stopping occasionally to pull out the album to admire the artwork, the gate-fold and the generally readable text listing lyrics or artist information on the inner sleeve. With a record album, you had something to prop up and admire whilst it played.

Aside from the rapidly dwindling specialist dealers, this nostalgic vision has all but faded away; replaced of course by the clinically perfect Compact Disc. Browsing is now a machine-gun like cacophony of hollow plastic dominoes cracking against one another as people feverishly thumb through them at the sale racks, barely seeing the artist, let alone the artwork. It hardly seems worth bothering anyway, as closer examination only presents you with a track list which would be no more legible had it been written on a grain of rice and placed in a novelty pendant. There is no feeling of substance.

Now you might be thinking that I’m one of these stuck-in-the-dark-ages advocates of vinyl, not so: my LP collection has been stashed away in the loft for several years now; I don’t even own a turntable and I rarely play CDs. My music is purely digital, much of it stored on the computer and the iPod. There no need to scan up and down the miniscule spines of the cases, my head pitched awkwardly at 45˚ looking for That’s What Someone Might Have Called Music 20 Years Ago Volume 24. No, I can flick through my entire collection, sort it by almost any means, search it and get it to pick me a random selection with the mere click of my mouse. There’s no need for the 5×5 insert, however comprehensive. Track lists, lyrics and even what the producer had for breakfast the day he put it all together can all be gleaned from the ‘net. Well, perhaps not all.

So, as I sat transferring the discs of my music collection from their jewel cases to an DJ case to become vaulted master copies, I found myself wondering if the age of the packaged insert has started its slow decent to oblivion. The artwork has simply become a quick way of knowing which of the five-thousand plus songs is currently pounding in my ears, should I not instantly recognise it; as is so often the case.

Why have I posted a photo of scaffolding? Firstly because I can but mainly because it’s approximately 125% more interesting than a Citrix installation; that’s why.
